Rail worker death

Fatigued zero-hours contract rail worker gets killed by a train.

It's really sad that stuff like this happens. Capitalism is killing people, not in the abstract "some other country, someone else's problem" way that some people (unfortunately) seem able to ignore, but here and now in the UK.

Capitalism can do even worse with understaffed trains and deficient cars, poor training and lax oversight.

what I find equally worrying is how little reporting outside of Canada this incident seemed to get, and how Canada allowed a situation to develop where safety measures that were introduced in previous centuries in other countries are watered down (just a couple of few years ago I was reading about transportation of petrochemicals in early 20th UK and precautions taken after similar incidents)

@gemlog @puffinus_puffinus on a wider scale the privatisation of public utilities and rampant subcontracting and competition for lowest bid has also removed the slack that allows young people to be properly trained in skilled trades and engineering and to implement safe working practices (I once wanted to work on the railways myself, but was put off when I saw the effects of privatisation back in the 1990s)

Goodbye Canadian National Railway, hello CN. Goodbye BC Rail, BC Highways, BC Ferries...

Privatization of rail networks is awful in every way.

The rails and trains are still owned by the government in Belgium, but the EUs forced liberalization has forced that to split into two companies.

Which means that a train driver is literally not allowed to communicate in an official capacity with a rail technician. If anything happens, at all, it has to be bureaucratically communicated up five levels and then down again for two people sitting a few meters apart to talk to each other. It's ridiculous.
