Fuchsia & Google's world domination plans

Zircon, Fuchsia's kernel, is MIT-licensed. Most of the rest is under a BSD-like license. None of these licenses grant any protection from Google patenting parts of Fuchsia and then suing its users for patent infringement. The LICENSE file refers to a PATENTS file (which I can't find), so their intent is clearly to grant only specific rights related to their patents.

@freakazoid And they would sue us for.. what exactly?

Fuchsia & Google's world domination plans

@nifker Infringing whatever patents they have that cover Fuchsia. For using the open source version of course, since their licensed version will grant more patent rights than the OSS version.

Fuchsia & Google's world domination plans

@freakazoid oh you mean software patents - most countries nowadays dont recognize even them.

Fuchsia & Google's world domination plans

@nifker They only need to stop Americans to keep anyone from reasonably being able to compete with their strategy using their own code.

Fuchsia & Google's world domination plans

@nifker By which I mean it prevents any US companies and anyone who wants to target the US market. It will also keep Americans from working on any such project because why bother if they can't use it? And they don't even need to actually sue, necessarily; the uncertainty they can create around it will probably be enough.

And it won't matter anyway because the real functionality will need hardware with no open source drivers.

Fuchsia & Google's world domination plans

@nifker "Real" functionality being the security components, GPUs, and neural network accelerators. The CPU will be standard and possibly open source (RISC-V, OpenPower), because Google doesn't want to have to do all the work on a compiler without help from FLOSS dupes.

Fuchsia & Google's world domination plans

@nifker I guess it's not fair to call them dupes since everyone benefits from compilers for standard platforms, but they and Apple are both investing heavily in LLVM so that they can have proprietary pieces of the compiler, which was much harder with GCC.

Maybe it's appropriate to call them dupes for working on LLVM instead of GCC.

@freakazoid I didnt even said "dupes" LOL

Fuchsia & Google's world domination plans

@nifker No, I did.

Fuchsia & Google's world domination plans

@freakazoid @nifker indeed. For a real-life impact, just look at how the decision to air gap themselves from patent-infringing software affect #Fedora (associated with US-incorporated Red Hat) vs Ubuntu (Canonical is based in a British tax haven somewhere).

No codecs out of the box (though MP3 is finally in) and we can't officially tell you how to get them
